What does the Bible say about women in leadership in the church?

suffragette-poster
I went to see the film “SUFFRAGETTE” this week – one of the last showings on the big screen. So if you haven’t seen it you will have to wait until it is available on video or they show it on DSTV. It has a powerful cast and tells the story of women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality in early-20th-century Britain. Carey Mulligan plays the lead role of Maud, a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.'s growing suffragette movement. Meryl Streep puts in a token appearance as Emmeline Pankhurst the leader of the movement. As she explained in an interview (*) this was to endorse the message of the film and to promote it in the USA.

It recounts a little recorded and told part of European and in fact world history. The Director (Sarah Gavron) and Script Writer (Abi Morgan) comment on how difficult it was to uncover the history of the suffragette movement and dig into the deeper underlying story. History has been largely recorded by men and so it does not get much space.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvWsErgWMuU

Watching the film I kept wondering what was being preached in the churches at the time. Were there leaders (they would all have been men) who used their position to give voice to those who had no voice? In the film the church does not get a look in apart from Mavis finding shelter in the cloisters of a church when she is thrown out of her home and clergy joining the funeral procession of one of the suffragette martyrs.

The struggle for women to be given equal rights in society and for women’s’ voices to be heard continues - in the church more so than else where. In this regard I am attaching an article I wrote in 2011 “What does the Bible say about women in leadership in the church” as well as a link to an article on the Junia project website “5 myths of male headship” that I shared on FB and got a whole bunch of likes and shares. That indicates again that this is still very much a live issue in many churches.

This is my attempt to use my position to add my voice to those speaking out against unjust and unbiblical attitudes in the church towards women.
